Case Study: Grandpa Greene's Online Store
Grandpa Greene’s was looking forward to a summer of visitors to its canal-side café in Diggle, Saddleworth. In March 2020, its plans were shattered when the government ordered the closure of eat-in establishments in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Facing several months of no business, Grandpa Greene’s looked for other ways to serve the local community. With strong relationships with local suppliers of milk, meat, and other produce, and a large refrigerator capacity, the café did not want to sit idle throughout the closure.
After considering various options, the perfect solution presented itself: rather than customers visiting the café for a summer afternoon tea, Grandpa Greene’s would bring summer directly to their doorsteps!
The Challenge: Helping a local café thrive during lockdown
Grandpa Greene’s approached us to create an online store to sell their range of Afternoon Teas, Ice Cream and other sundry products.
The store had to reflect their high-quality brand, be implemented quickly to take advantage of the sudden and short opportunity, and be cost effective – at the time, no-one knew how long lockdown restrictions and the requirements to sell online would last.
We worked with Rick Scholes at Grandpa Greene’s to identify the specific marketing and operational requirements for the new store:
-
Delivery
Defined delivery slots, similar to online supermarkets. Ability to limit delivery locations, to make delivery rounds manageable.
-
System Integration
Intengration into delivery planning tool. Ability to take payments using preferred platform.
-
Branding
'On brand' design
-
Ease of use
Easy for customers to book delivery slots and make orders
What we did
We conducted research to find an appropriate solution, knowing that most shopping cart software would not meet these requirements without further development or extension. We recommended a shopping cart service which is designed to mimic the online supermarket experience familiar to many shoppers. The recommended solution was customisable so that we were able to rapidly style it in the Grandpa Greene’s brand.
We defined the store structure around the products which were to be sold and added products to the site. A payment method already used by Grandpa Greene’s was integrated into the store.
Throughout the build we were in regular contact with Grandpa Greene’s, who were able to provide rapid feedback into the process.
We designed some promotional graphics for use on the Grandpa Greene’s website and social media channels at launch.
Problem solved – The Results
Within a week of being commissioned we were able to launch the store. A ‘soft launch’ was carried out to help identify and rapidly solve any operational challenges, before the store was promoted on Grandpa Greene’s website and social media channels in time for the Easter weekend.
The store was a huge success. Delivery slots became sold out just a couple of days after being released, and more slots were opened up as capacity was increased. Over 3,000 afternoon teas being enjoyed over the summer months.
